Ontario government must ‘urgently’ hire more long-term-care staff before second COVID-19 wave hits

Premier Doug Ford’s government should “urgently” hire new nurses and front-line workers to give long-term-care residents the four hours of daily care they need, a long-awaited staffing report says.

Staffing is critical to creating a higher quality of life and care for residents,” the Long-Term Care Staffing Study Report concluded. It was released on Thursday by the Ministry of Long-Term Care.

“We need government to make a commitment that this report will not be shelved to collect dust,” said Candace Rennick, secretary treasurer of the Canadian Union of Public Employees in Ontario, which represents 35,000 long-term-care staff. “Without delay, they need to implement timelines and make financial investments to ensure these recommendations become reality.”
